A Helpful Guide to Drinking Water Filters

If you’re interested in protecting your health from the water you drink, you have a host of choices in front of you. You are not the only one who doesn’t trust their tap water, and wants a better alternative, ranging from bottled water to the various drinking water filters available. Between major cities fudging data on water quality tests, and the threat of lead, chlorine, and various drugs and other chemical contaminants in you water, more and more people are looking for solutions that provide them the water they need while still getting the protection they need. So the question is: Which is the best options, out of all the available products?

Bottled water at first blush might seem to be a viable alternative… but did you know that there are no standards in place to make certain that bottled water is of a higher quality than anything that comes out of your tap? According to the 1999 National Defenses Resource Council released a report that stated that as much as 70% of bottled water avoided FDA water quality laws through legal loopholes such as selling water to the same state that it is gathered from. So that blows that option right out of the water right there.

Ultimately it comes down to selecting a drinking water filter… but there are so many to choose from, it may be difficult to come to a decision based on the many products available. But it doesn’t have to be so complicated. Choosing the right water filter comes down to three major factors: keeping negative contaminants out, keeping natural water quality in, and getting these things at an affordable cost. As it turns out, filters are more different than you might think.

Two major styles of drinking water filters, Reverse Osmosis and distillation, offer plausible solutions to some aspects of water, but not others. Distillation systems work by distilling the water, boiling them and then condensing them to remove unwanted substances. But there are two problems with this approach… since distillation removes substances based off of boiling points, traces of chemicals may still remain within the water, perpetuating the danger of waterborne drugs and other chemical undesirables. As well, this process completely removes the natural mineral content within water, which can lead to mineral deficiencies and all manner of health problems.

The Reverse Osmosis style of drinking water filters are plagued by the same sorts of shortcomings. It functions by running water through a semi permeable membrane, which allows water molecules through but not the molecules that are larger… this works fine for a lot of problematic things in water, but certain chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides actually have a smaller molecular size, and may pass through undetected!

This means that an Reverse Osmosis system must be paired with a carbon filter, in addition to it needing suitable water pressure for the filter system to function properly. As well, due to it’s nature as a diaphragm tank system, Reverse Osmosis loses a significant amount of water more than it retains.. Up to 300%!

But there is hope. Some drinking water filters are now opting to use a multi-media block filter, which incorporates a carbon filter and several other sages of water filtration to provide comprehensive filtration that still includes all the healthful minerals. Miraculously, this technology is available at a fraction of the cost of these other systems! It’s true what they say about technology: As things get better, they also get cheaper.

Why suffer archaic filtration technology, when the best drinking water filters combine all of the best traits at a fraction of the cost? Multi-stage filtration processes truly are the best bet…the rest are just “all wet”!
